It's almost been two years now since I came back from one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It's one of my favourite stories to tell, and I'm sure if we've hung out in the past I've shared it with you.. This one's going to be a challenge to keep short!
My job, or more accurately the only thing paying for my food, room, and board was working an organic farm/bed and breakfast as a woofer (still don't really know what that acronym stands for, I guess I could look it up but I'm keeping the mystery alive). I was responsible for three greenhouses, 90 or so chickens of different variety, a banana plantation, three donkeys, and a big fat pig aptly named "Ms. Piggy". I'm currently working on selling the rights to a Hollywood film company.. The respect for physical labour I gained and just overall practical knowledge is something I think you can only learn when placed head first into this type of situation. I hit it off pretty quickly with another woofer on the farm named Connor, who was from Florida and had an incredible taste in comedy and music so it wasn't hard getting along with that guy right off the bat. Connor's still living the dream working full time at another farm on the island, he put off college for a few more years but knowing what I was able to learn in only three months I can say it's probably time well spent! Another woofer on the farm was responsible for helping in everything else on the B&B side, oddly enough she was from Hamilton!
From swimming hand to flipper with Green sea turtles, an epic surprise form my grandparents who visited halfway through my trip and stayed at the B&B, eating the most incredible diet of fresh tropical fruit (bananas will never be the same), and experiencing lava flowing into the Pacific Ocean on a guided boat tour.. It's going to be a tough one to top!
Every year around mid January my stomach starts to turn in eager anticipation of another trip out to the Big Island, where there are only two times of day: daytime, and night time. I'll be back there.. Here are some of my favourite photos from my time spent, Enjoy!
